Championship events at Karting North East
British Championship Super One
The 5th round of the 6 round MSA British Championship series takes place at the North East’s premier karting circuit on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th August 2007. It will see the elite of the karting world taking part as the Formula A karts used are the quickest ever to visit the circuit. Supporting classes include Intercontinental A, Junior Intercontinental A and the ever popular Cadets ( being 8 – 12 year old drivers ). Most drivers are supported by professional race teams which include the ZIP Young Guns team whose previous team drivers include Lewis Hamilton and David Coulthard. Success at this level results in drivers moving up into British Formula Renault as a stepping stone towards Formula One. Lewis Hamilton won in kart Formula A in 2000 then winning Formula Renault in 2003. A 14 year old driver from Barnsley, Oliver Rowland, will be competing being the latest karter to sign for the McLaren Mercedes F1 team.
The racing will be fast and furious with lots of racing incident and drama. Teams will be on site and testing from Thursday morning allowing access for TV etc before the race weekend if preferred.
Internations
The following weekend i.e. Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd September Karting North East host a three national Challenge event at the karting circuit. 50 drivers from each national team i.e. England, Scotland and Wales will compete to be declared the best in the U.K. in their class. The format is based on friendly competition with the team managers refereeing the event rather than independent MSA officials. As such the atmosphere is competitive but friendly between all those taking part. Several local drivers have been picked to represent their country. |
